It is not uncommon that we hear from clients: “My accent gets in the way.” Or, “I’m always misunderstood.”
Often, the next sentence is, “I think I need to get rid of my accent.”
We don’t believe in that. Your accent is part of your identity. And your voice should serve you, not erase who you are.
We believe in celebrating accents and that your linguistic background can give you a communication advantage.
This month at Peacock Voices, we’re focusing on how to refine communication without compromising authenticity.
It’s not your entire speech pattern that affects how you’re understood.
It’s small, specific speech habits that might not translate well in English.
Accents Are Not the Problem
Accents don’t make a person less intelligent, credible, or capable.
Every language has vocal patterns with strengths and challenges when applied to English.
The goal isn’t to eliminate your accent. It’s to find what works, amplify your vocal superpowers, and adjust the pieces causing any confusion.
Vocal Techniques for Professionals: Keep the Good, Adjust the Rest
Here’s how to work with your accent, not against it:
1. Spot Your Superpowers
Identify what makes your accent engaging. For example, romance languages like Spanish and Italian often bring long, melodic lines and natural inflection. These are key traits for a charismatic speaking style.
2. Slow Down If Needed
If your original language has more connected, fast-paced speech patterns (like Spanish), slow your pacing slightly in English. English relies heavily on consonants and rhythm, so clarity often comes from articulation and spacing.
3. Keep What Works, Practice What Doesn’t
Take it sentence by sentence. Strengthen the elements that serve you and gently shift those that don’t. It’s not about replacing your voice, it’s about making small changes that improve clarity.
Accents and Executive Presence
This isn’t just for multilingual speakers! Regional accents can benefit from the same approach. Even subtle changes in volume, pacing, or resonance can help you sound more grounded, persuasive, and clear.
Your accent is a part of your leadership. Keep the color. Keep the texture. Keep the musicality. Just make the minor adjustments that help you to be heard.
Authenticity + Strategy = Confidence
At Peacock Voices, we believe that you don’t need to sound like someone else to lead like yourself. Our private coaching helps you use your natural voice more effectively—with precision, clarity, and authenticity.
Next month, we’re talking about how your voice can affect your Executive Presence. Stay tuned!
